which is correct on USA charvels?

You usually see footballs on the four digit Charvels onward though I have seen occasional Les Paul style plates here and there after that period on four digit serialized guitars. For the most part late 81 and prior would most likely have a square.

In 81 both will be seen.Yes prior to that square was common. I would think whatever they had on hand was used.
