Saw them back in the day at The Omni in Oakland and got to talk to Marty for an extended period of time before the set...nice dude, completely focused on playing...the albums are absolutely insane, couldn't listen to them continually, but they're good fun!

It was pretty funny - my best friend worked with Marty's (then) girlfriend, had to have been 1987-ish?, clerking in a San Francisco law office...he called me up, said she could get Marty to put us on the guest list for the show...we show early (oddly enough, we weren't drunk ), and she pops out during the warm-up band with Marty! It was too funny...completely nice guy, really soft spoken, completely straight-edge, talked about music for a bit, then he excused himself to warm-up a bit before they hit stage...to be honest, I don't remember the set list, but it was basically Speed Metal Symphony and Go Off one after another...the 2 take-aways I really had was his obsession with Japanese chicks, and an aversion to anything that didn't involve playing guitar...:ROTF:

Wow... 80's cheese at its finest. I think the singer had one too many Sakis before the show (though it could be a bad mix... the vocals are too loud).

Marty and Jason were fantastic though. I do prefer Marty's playing however... he plays some very cool lines, and I think he was more developed as a player than Jason was during the Cacophony days. Jason was trying too hard to be a "shredder" IMO and Marty sprinkled (and still does) his fretboard gymnastics with more melodic lines.

Pete Marino is a fat tool and just sucked, their second singer was a lot better.

You can hear Jasons playing evolving throughout Cacophony, but by the time he did his solo stuff I feel he had surpassed Marty.

How do you do that Marty "Japanese-sounding" bend?

I can come sort of close with the whammy bar, but I know that's not how he does it. Since he only plays hardtails now, and he still does that bend all the time.

There is so many good guitar players out there that should be recognized for their achievements. Unfortunately, the moniker "shredder" affects people's perceptions

Isn't it great when you rediscover a band. I haven't listened to these dudes since I first got my Jackson 2 years ago.

I haven't listened to that stuff in almost 20 years. Listening to it now is what I would qualify as a "rediscovery". Shit, I have CD's over two years old that I haven't even listened to yet

Personally, I liked their solo work better than the Cacophany material.

I've had that show on video tape for like 15 years - it's cool to see like once but it's horrible to watch them, made me cringe.

The damn camera man never zeros in on becker or friedman whenever one of them would be doing something cool either they would be showing the drummer or the dumbass singer - pisses you off more than anything.
