Hey Bill, what do you think of Nile? My friend puts them in the same category as these guys (I personally don't really like either) but I think they aren't even close.

Sorry if this is off topic.

Nile and Necrophagist aren't really that alike IMO. Nile don't use much pinch harmonics for a start!
I love Nile, they're easily the best death metal band...well, probably ever actually. AOTW is an incredible album - both progressive with awesome musicianship, yet full of amazing grooves.
Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide are all amazing, but for sheer consistency and vision Nile beat them all. IMO.

I've never been a huge Nile fan but I have to admit they have some seriously creative song titles like "Papyrus Containing the Spell to Preserve It's Possessor Against Attacks from He who is in the Water".

Edit: Karl is also kinda funny. "It's like a four-fingered diminished thingy", "If you get the clicky-click going it's still four to the stroke".

I thought Nile was great 10 years ago when they released "amoung the catacombs". Then I bought the next two "Black seeds.." and whatever. I NEVER listened to them again after seeing them live twice. I was within an arms reach..along with Cleveland Metal John. We were watching Karl Sanders having a good night. He was in a great mood and really getting into it. He fucking SUCKED ASS!! The band is awesome..the bass player and drummer IS Nile. But Karl plays pure fucking slop..out of key, random slop..period! He's very overrated IMO!!!

I agree with Martin bro about their niche. They're not a "progressive" death metal band. They're in league with Morbid Angel, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Cryptospy ect..only Jack Owens, Pat O'Brien and Ralph Santolla..blow me away...they rule!!!

Deicide's "Stench of redemption" (Santolla/Owens) owns! Nile = Protools, triggers, and LOTS of studio polish. The drummmer and bass player/singer rules..but that's it.

I'm listening to Epitaph right now. I, too, can't believe that more guitar players aren't into Muhammed. Astonishing player, writer and arranger. I'm a total metalhead so monster vocals don't faze me anymore. The vibrato used by Muhammed and cohorts is, I'm quite certain, purposefully broad. Musicians of his caliber don't make those kind of mistakes.

I saw them earlier this year and was really let down by the sound. I listen from time to time at home, but I don't think I would pay to see them ever again.

And very effective! Not to be mistaken for people who just can't bend...dissonance to create anticipation...he always resolves it...knows exactly what he is doing.

I love Necrophagist. I went through a phase where I listened to them all the time, I bought the official tab book and learnt a few things but never practised them enough to get them sounding decent enough at full speed or anything. Muhammed's style is too different to mine for me to be able to pick it up instantly, like I can do with Paul Gilbert or Alexi Laiho.

I'm curious about the new album, 'cause they're using 7-string guitars tuned down a whole step.

Sorry guys but Necrophagist bore the piss out of me, and the funny thing is I can't put my finger on why?? I really can't I mean I think Mohammad is an amazing tactitian for this type of stuff, and I realise that this is "extreme" metal, but sometimes doing something for the sake of doing it because you can is just forced to me.
However I so EAGERLY await Severed Saviours new cd, my god, the one track on their myspace just fucking slaughters! I totally can't wait, Mike will surly outdo himself with this! tone for days! fuck! when you have a death metal guy as obsessive with tones as a vintage guy! fuck watch out, with chop to fucking spare too, sorry I hope that wasn't too much of a cock suck, if it makes you feel better I was using my teeth! haha

Bill I can't fucking agree with you more about Nile, everyone spouts off about how progressive the new shit is? I'm sorry, I REALLY think all the new shit is so samish sounding, with very LITTLE progress over Catacmobs, I mean Catacombs had WAY more variance and dynamics with all sorts of different themes and songs that WERE not Death metal, where now there is one or two little snippits and the rest is just the same tune over and over again, and by the way, KArl's song titles are just from the fucking english translation of the "egyptian book of the dead" like straight ripped out of the book, and entire songs are ripped out of the book, word for word, it's a specific version of the book too, as there are a few translations but one specific that he uses, makes for easy lyric writing! hahahahaha

anyhow Morbid Angel will always be the best death metal band for me, based on Covenant and Domination alone, aside from all the rest of thier material and I really think the new one will bring the back to the power and agression on Domination, I can't fuckign wait!!!! here is my top 5 of death metal recrodings

Morbid Angel- Domination or Formulas Fatal to the Flesh minus the last 3 keyboard songs
                          Carcass- Heartwork
                          Immolation- Here in After
                          Death- Symbolic
                          Cryptopsy- None So Vile

Of course this is my humble opinion! but I am stuck in a certain era of death metal, just like I am stuck in a certain era for metal period, I mean I don't have to listen to Lamb of God because Pantera already did it better! hahahahaha and along with the slew of new death metal bands, all the ones listed above already did it better! hahaha

I will say it does feel like the mid ninties again and how the scene was so over saturated by alot of not very good bands!

I'm really looking forward to the new Severed Savior as well, when I last checked there were two songs up on their myspace.
Plus they did a promo of the song "Servile Insurrection" a while ago, and that one was killer too. Great songwriting, feels like they really moved forward in their writing!

Severed Saviour are underrated IMO...Haven't heard from Mike...He still here?

Anyhow...I look forward to the new Necrophagist...Yes, you need to be in a "Necrophagist mood" makes me practice! I always think..."That fucker!!!!" I have to learn that! He executes it live too and seems to be almost obsessed with his live performance of the music and technique...this is good, as it sets the bar up higher...that is what technical music is about. When I'm not in the mood...There is always ABBA!

I was surprised to read he didn’t even play guitar for 4 years because he wasn’t playing live so…he didn’t need to??? FUCKER!!!

No one's saying that Necrophagist is the best band evuh! Its just a different death metal band from the rest. ...in a good way. Take your severed saviour for example, heavily distorted guitars, deicide-ish vocals, napalm death type drumming...there are tons of bands that sound like them. But necrophagist is so unique. The drums and the guitar tones blend so well, that its sometime hard to tell which is which. the guitar parts are so well balanced and distortion has been used tastefully not to the point of over saturation. Yet, its a brutal death metal band.
