has anyone checked out the new version of COP re-recorded for Guitar Hero III?

Living Colour's profile including the latest music, albums, songs, music videos and more updates.

I know a lot of people have had issues with Vernon's solo on this particular song, and have possibly (and unfortunately) written off the band's entire brilliant catalogue as a result. But it seems that 20 years of playing the tune live has further honed Vern's already formidable chops and tightened the solo right up. The frenetic solo is still there, but seems more, I dunno, cohesive now? Check it out!

I like the groove and attitude Vernon's playing has, but his soloing style is a little frantic for me.

I thought the original solo was great... now sure, it was sloppy and what not, but it went well with the song for sure. It was kinda like... "hey, Im just gonna tear shit up, like it or not!"

The new solo, and whole recording for that matter, IMHO is nowhere near as good as the first. They sound more like a garage band now. Hell, I think the new solo is even sloppier!

            I always liked them.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

Excellent stuff ! Been a fan since I first heard 'em way back when. Thanks for posting this!! Think I prefer the original though...

I've heard that Vernon was a badass NY jazz player and actually can play very musically but he just doesn't give a fuck. But a lot of high calibre players like Vai seem to love his frantic style... not my thing but love the band...fantastic

The original solo was a mess...one of the worst I've ever heard. I saw them open for the Stones back in '89 and Vernon's playing was aweful for the whole set. Terrible guitarist, terrible tone. Hopefully he's better these days but I haven't listened to anything that he's done since their second album.

I love Living Color! I was lucky enough to see them when they supported Anthrax. I think I prefer the original, but it's still a fucking good song and it's nice to see he's still using Hamers!

I liked the first solo too. But I know it was a deal-breaker for a lot of guitarists, and a lot of people wrote off the band because of one solo in one song. I think that's a shame

And yea, Endrik, he can play very in the pocket when he wants to. The solos on Love Rears Its Ugly Head & Open Letter to a Landlord are great examples of his playing when he shows some restraint.

Another good example is his solo on Under Cover of Darkness. Starts of jazzy & in the pocket, gradually takes it further & further out into bizarro world before coming back inside before the vocals start again.

btw. I think Doug emulates guitar solos very well on a bass when he is doing some trippy experimental stuff

the best playing by Vernon I've heard was with his experimental jazz/fusion band... but his soundscapes and whatnot are allways very cool, I specially love the stuff he does with reverse delay

that being said, they have one of the best singers and one of the most talented and versatile rhythm sections ever

I spent a couple of hours watching Doug vids on YouTube yesterday. Someone has posted his Montreux clinic from 2001 in 4 parts there. Some cool fun with loopers & a whammy pedal on the second one, IIRC. The 4 minute backstage warmup one from NAMM is very cool too

I hated it at first, but then I heard the words, and it fit the song.
The friggin world is a mess, and the solo describes that part.
