They also do a really good cover of Helloween's "I Want Out". They've got a lot of awesome tunes. Check out Black Sheep on Winterheart's Guild(?). I think that the guitarist (Jani?) was only about 20 or so when they did that album. Amazing stuff.

Sonata Arctica is great! I have Ecliptica, Silence, and Winterheart's Guild. So far I like Silence the most, but I need to give Guild some more time. Can anyone tell me how good the live album is?

Cheers,

-Mike

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">you must be a little mixed up because Guild is the newest sonata arctica album to com eout. That would put him at the ripe old age of about 15 for ecliptica. I doubt that for some reason.

O.K. To clear it up. Black Sheep was on Silence released in 2001. Jani was born in 1980, so he was 20-21 when he did that album. Winterheart's Guild was the newest album released in 2003, so he was 22-23 depending on when it was recorded. I wasn't too far off on his age. Either way, he is young and really, really good.

Here's the full details of them.

Finnish prog metal quartet Sonata Arctica specializes in a soaring, orchestral variation on European heavy metal, fusing the sweeping, romantic bombast of bands like Europe with the over-the-top instrumental chops of Dream Theater. Born in 1996, the band, which included vocalist Tony Kakko, guitarist Jani Liimatainen, drummer Tommy Portimo, keyboardist Mikko Harkin, and bassist Janne Kivilahti, recorded a handful of demos before releasing their first single, "UnOpened," on Spinefarm Records in July of 1999. Producer Mikko Karmila (Children of Bodom, Stratovarius, Nightwish) recorded and mixed Sonata Arctica's full-length debut, Eliptica, and the album was released in 2000 by Spinefarm and Century Media Records. Following a successful tour with Rhapsody and Stratovarius, the group put out a six-song EP, Successor-MCD, which featured live tracks, a pair of covers, and other previously unreleased material. Sonata Arctica were rewarded with various awards and honors around this time: Hard N' Heavy magazine voted them Newcomer of the Year, as did Emma, the Finnish Music Awards. Kivilahti quit the band in late 2000 and was replaced by Marko Paasikoski before work began on the band's second full-length album. With producer Ahti Kortelainen behind the boards, Sonata Arctica recorded Silence at Tico-Tico studios in time for a 2001 release.

And Yes, Jani is born in 1980

I have all their material....a little to "happy" sounding for my taste nowadays ...but a very accomplished Swedish Power metal band indeed..

You want to hear something awesome get The Armada ..."Rage of the Armada " on limb records ...it's the band of old Stormwitch's guitarist and drummer ....he definitely would give Mike Romeo a run for his money ..

Also Last Tribe with Magnus Karlsson....is AWESOME!!!

and last but not least AT Vance with Olaf Lenk would kick your balls in with his polished brand of shred "the evil is in you" has Mats levins on vocals!!...he smokes Romeo...he's that friggin' good!!!

Oh and a new comer ...Space oddessy ....man this is some crazy shred ...truly kick ass stuff .....

I INSIST you guys check into this and you can thank me later!!!

Long live true fuckin' metal!!!!

I am with Bill. They sound too "happy" for me. Don't know how you all feel but i really don't like much new power metal bands. Maybe i haven't heard enough of Sonata Arctica but i think they quite sound like Stratovarius, at least with their instrument and song arrangement.
That of course doesn't make them bad in general and from what i heard they are great musicians. It's just i can't get too much into them.
The only newer power metal band i hear is Sinergy and Nocturnal Rites. In the few moments i listen to power metal it's 99% my old heroes Running wild, Helloween and Blind Guardian.
