Original Inspirations

Who most made you want to play guitar in the first place? I'm not asking who your favorite guitarists now are, but who most made you want to pick up the guitar and rock out. Go ahead, pick 5

My 5, in no order: (btw, i started playing in the late 70's, so Randy wasn't known yet)

Jimi Hendrix--duh
Ritchie Blackmore--Mr. Heavy
Tony Iommi--Even heavier than Mr. Heavy
Steve Morse--he has always amazed me with his sheer speed.
Eddie Van Halen--turned the guitar world upside down with Eruption!!!

Re: Original Inspirations

Jimi
Eddie (made me play all day everyday)
Randy
Yngwie
Allan Holdsworth (sent me back to the wood shed)

I'll never forget the 1st time I heard Eddie. I was on my way to BMX practice, when my older brother friend goes to me, I hear you are getting pretty good on guitar. I said yeah not bad I can play some Jimi now. He goes listen to this and puts in an 8 track (yes 8 track)of VH 1
the whole practice all I could is think to myself what the hell was that. We had a 45 ride, I couldn't get enough. I said this is what I want to do.

Re: Original Inspirations

here are my very first inspirations from when I was a little kid, the stuff my mom listened to. these guys made me think guitar sounded cool:

lynyrd skynyrd (sp?)
the eagles (harmony guitars)
ufo
dixie dregs
pink floyd
GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

Re: Original Inspirations

In order of biggest influence to least...

Michael Schenker
Ritchie Blackmore
Tipton/Downing
Murray/Smith
Kath
Iommi

Those are the biggies, of course you could spend days listing everyone you liked!

Re: Original Inspirations

Hetfield, Mustaine, Hanneman

Right now the biggest inspiration I have as far as songwriting and stuff is Dan Swano, Akerfeldt an dKatatonia.

lyrics I've come up with have a katatonia vibe to them. I just have an easier time writing that kind of stuff.

Re: Original Inspirations

mmh....the first one was hetfield, then came kirk hammett because at the time i played the guitar, too, i recognized that the "noise" was cool stuff and (for a beginner) hard as hell to play as i grew better i have been inspired by van halen, malmsteen, petrucci (of course) and the classics (page, clapton, hendrix etc)

nowadays, when i start jamming out, record this and listen to it afterwards, i think i sound (or want to sound ) like a mixture of van halen and kirk hammet, with a little bit kerry king (those whammy bar things ^^)

By the looks of it I'm one of the younger players here.

5. Ihsahn (of Emperor)
4. Andy Laroque
3. Malmsteen
2. Randy
3. Jason Becker - my god.
