  • My guitar lesson with Bruce Bouillet

Thought I'd just share a quick story.

Back in the spring of 1990, I had a guitar lesson with Bruce Bouillet of Racer X. At that time, Racer X was just ending. Bruce, John, and Scott had been doing shows as the new Racer X with Jamie Brown in Fall '89. By Spring, Jamie was replaced by John Corabi and Scott left for Priest. Walt was in on drums and they were gigging around L.A. calling themselves Saints or Sinners. I was just 18 and worshiped Racer X. Somehow I managed to get Bruce's home phone number from another guitarist. I called him up and said I was interested in a guitar lesson. He was real cool. We set it up. I believe it was $20 for an hour. I actually drove to his small house that he was sharing with John A. He sat on his bed and me in a small chair. I basically asked him questions and he would answer and show me how to play it. "Remember that lick in this Racer X solo? How do you play that?" Then he'd show me. It was so... cool. Well worth the $20. I think he was playing a Fender strat. I wanted to ask him if I could try out his orange Ibanez, but didn't have the guts. I was, of course, playing my yellow/black crackle Jackson! Anyway, that was it.

Cool, I would think meeting a person you idolize would spark your will to become a better guitarist! Cool story, rock on

Cool story! I used to take lessons from a local named Lou Rojas. He was the first guy that I ever saw sweep. He was a really cool guy...very mellow and laid back. He knew Eric Johnson and was a huge Holdsworth fan. He never made it. I think now he is a Fender rep. Anyway, we had a good time...although he was so much better than I was back then that I could never relax enough to really play in front of him!

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

Yep, just one lesson. I was a college student. $20 was a lot for me back then and the drive was a long one.
