On the '57 (aka "The Beast"), the bridge pickup is a Dimarzio Super Distortion, the middle is stock, and the neck is a Dimarzio PAF. In his new guitars he's using Duncan SHR1's aka "Hot Rails."

        Re: Iron Maiden Strats

I put the Super Distortion & PAF set up in one of my FR Classic Strat's and I don't really care for the way it sounds. It works for Dave, but there's too much brightness in the bridge for me. The PAF sounds great though. Plus, I'm using different amps and pedals than what he used, so....

Do you know what the route under the guard is on these? Is it routed all singles or could you stick a hum in the bridge?

Look at all this great info! I really think Fender should do the right thing a do real signature models.

[/ QUOTE ] That's a shame. I'd imagine that a faithful replica of Dave's black strat would sell pretty easily. I generally don't like strats and I'd buy one.

                            Re: Iron Maiden Strats

Well, I write what I know about Dave's guitar:

it is for sure a real '57 strat, that he purchased when Iron Maiden got the contract with EMI (before he was using late '70s strats with the black pickguard) and it was modified rounting (the vintage guys will be pissed off about it...)the body to put two humbuckers at the neck and at the bridge, this was VERY unusual in the ealry '80s because everybody used the SSH combination, but Dave seemed to be the first guy to use the neck pickup for soloing, and in fact in all the first Maiden records his sound is creamier and easy to be identified.

It is also interesting to notice that in these days he was also using a late '70s Gibson SG custom with three humbuckers, two of them (neck and bridge, of course!) were DiMarzio X2N, this brings to the conclusion that he uses the same pickups for bridge and neck position, therefore the two hums on hi strat should be a couple of super distortion.

It is also interesting to note that the guitar until '83 was fitted with a standard vintage fender bridge, and after a Floyd Rose system was installed ( to carry on the opera of destruction of the myth of "true vintage" ), in this conmfiguration the guitar is used until present days, I saw in various concerts in '98,'00 and '04, therefore this job was supposed to be done in late '83/early '84.

About the Iron Maiden signature, I tried it in 2001, nice guitar,it is a sort of mixt of the three guitars of the guysave' floyd and neck, Janick's hot rails and Adrian's JB jr...

I dont really agree with your reasoning that because one guitar has the same pickups (in bridge and neck) that all of his guitars must In the back of the dimarzio catalogue, Dave is listed as using super distortions and PAF's.
