  • marshall 2210 (tube) question

    copy/paste from my other thread:

however...and that's the downside of the story...i guess it needs new powertubes. there was a crackling sound coming out of the speakers from time to time when we didn't play, regardless of the channel that was selected. at first i thought it might be a bad cable, but even after unplugging everything the crackling didn't stop.
i *guess* the powertubes are going bad after all, or could there be another reason?

if it's due to the powertubes going bad, what would be a good replacement? the marshall's got plenty of mids and highs (and volume ) as it is, so i think a somewhat scooped tube with a pronounced bottom end would suit my style best.
right now i was thinking of the winged c svetlana EL34, the JJ E34L, or the JJ KT77...especially the latter. any thoughts on that, or other recommendations?

The winged C's are a very popular tube get in tough with watford valves in the UK, or join the forum to enquire about specific tones...

If i'm thinking right the preamp tubes tend to affect the overall sound more than the power tubes...

    Good luck

yeah, but then again, i'm already digging the overall sound, and if i'm thinking right the powertubes are going bad (hence the noises coming out of the cab) anyways, that's why i'm asking about the different models/brands and their sonic differences...

We'#ll i'm no expert but I know a lot of people dig JJ's for the powertubes, usually people like to combine various preamp tubes to get the best results..

Try contacting some tube experts who might know which is the best combination for the preamp tubes, typically squeals and various other nasty noises are due to bad preamp tubes bad power tubes normally melt the transformer or blow fuses...

I shall look around for a good combination of pre's what kind of sound are you after?

Ok so i've done abit of searching and foudn some valves that might be up your alley...

first are groove tubes E34L based on mullards...these are also cryogenically treated...
