Only bad thing about a Univalve is it won't do tight, heavy tones. Awesome for vintage stuff or 70s rock, and 80s metal with a boost... but a dedicated high gain amp like a Mesa, Soldano or VHT would shit all over one for metal IMHO.

Yeah, it's definitely not a scooped-mid sort of amp. I'm actually getting great 80s metal tones without a boost in sight. The tube choice is a 7025-5751 into either a 6K6 or 6V6. I'm still pretty amazed at the grind I'm able to get out of it. The Duncan Distortion and JB pickups I favor probably don't hurt matters any.
