  • Mesa 50/50 or 2:Fifty?

Yeah, I know... I got alot of questions about power amps these days.

Anyway... I am buying one of these this week. But... which one?

I've had a Mesa 50/50 in the past. I'm wondering if its worth it to spend the extra dough and snag a 2:Fifty.

So for the Boogie experts out there I ask you this:

What the hell is the difference between a Mesa 50/50 and a Mesa 2:Fifty?

    Thanks, Mike.

There is no half/low power switch on the 2:50 like there is on the 50/50, don't think there is a difference otherwise.

I have the 50/50 and I use the half/low power switch all the time. That 15 watts of tube power is still way loud. I only switch to full when playing with a loud drummer. If the new one doesn't have that, I'd get the old-school one. I think the 2:50 does have a switch so either 6L6 or EL34 tubes could eb used, but the 6L6 do me justice..

wow, yeah...I just read the manual to double check the wattage of the lower power switch; it certainly is 15 watts per channel, and damn, does 30 total watts put out a lot of power. The interesting thing is, with it turned up a lot, say to 7...when I switch to high power, the audible volume difference seems minimal, and it seems more the headroom changes, I guess you could say. And yeah, the old 50/50 is a fixed bias 6L6 amp...the new 2:50 is switchable between 6L6 and EL34. Plus the new 2:50 looks more like a recto.

          Cheers,
          Nick
