If you listen carefully you can hear the intro being played as a harmony under the chorus.
Use full chords (G maj, D, C, D) instead of bar chords and you can nail the underlying intro harmony with it. Requires some finger picking work but sounds awesome.

I need to steal my daughter's flip cam one night and show you how I play it.
I was trying to figure out if there was a second guitar (probably was in the studio cut) as you can hear it in the mix.
So I pulled up the Funhouse live video and it took a few rewinds before I was able to figure out what he was doing.
