Winter NAMM 2009 – Review NAMM recently announced final registration and exhibitor numbers for the 2009 NAMM Show. At show close, NAMM reported 85,799 registrants, a three percent decrease from last year. The association also reported 1,505 exhibitors at this year's show. International registration also experienced a two percent decrease. "The 2009 NAMM Show was perhaps one of the most important industry gatherings in memory," says NAMM president and CEO Joe Lamond. "Our members once again demonstrated their determination and persistence as the best and brightest from around the world gathered to experience four days of new products, NAMM University courses, networking and great live music." To view video coverage and news about the 2009 NAMM Show, interested parties may visit www.namm.org/thenammshow. The next NAMM trade show will be Summer NAMM, which will be held July 17-19, 2009 in Nashville.

LOUD's New CM Partners LOUD Technologies Inc. recently announced two new contract manufacturing ("CM") partners and the reallocation of production for certain EAW and Mackie products across its worldwide supply chain to replace capacity lost when the prior CM for those products discontinued operations in December, 2008. Meanwhile, supplies of all other EAW and Mackie products, as well as Alvarez, Ampeg, Crate and Martin branded products continue uninterrupted, as they are manufactured at other LOUD CM partners. "We were already moving to secure alternate EAW and Mackie production sources in response to growing backlogs with this prior supplier, and these efforts remain LOUD's top priority. We just signed manufacturing agreements with two new contract manufacturers and added additional capacity at a LOUD-owned U.S. facility," comments Jim Stewart, LOUD chief operating officer. "We already have new lines up and running for EAW KF and SB loudspeakers, as well as Mackie MR and HRmk2 studio monitors, and plan to bring up additional lines for other products every few weeks until supplies are stabilized."

Disney Star Guitarist: Guitar Hero With Real Guitars Disney Star Guitarist (yes, from that Disney), made with help from Washburn Guitars, uses the same style of "falling notes" that Guitar Hero and Rock Band employ, but instead of a plastic peripheral, Star Guitarist makes use of a real guitar. The special strings are included with the $200 game, and can be strung onto any standard guitar. Disney Star Guitarist, along with similar versions for keyboards and vocals, will be released for both PC and Mac this summer. (Source: Wired)

Mass. Lawmakers Reject Sterilization Bill A recent bill (H5176) was submitted to the Massachusetts House of Representatives that would have required the sterilization of all school band instruments for hygienic reasons. The report of the Band Instrument Commission Bill #413, chaired by George Keverian, noted that "the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has called the sterilization of musical wind instruments a valid public health issue consistent with the universal precautions adhered to in medical settings relative to instruments contaminated with body fluids" and stated, "all musical wind instruments that are previously played (contaminated) should comply wit sterilization protocols to ensure the safe transfer of a body fluid contaminated musical wind instrument from one player to the next." Health concerns not withstanding, had the bill passed, the logistical implications of enacting such a program would have had far reaching effect on the state's school band programs and, consequently, MI trade.
