  • Recommend me a good portable recorder...

There so many, and really all we need it for is to record songs so our singer can learn the structure on his own time etc... Not looking for a pro recording just something i can save on a flashdrive easily, or burn to a disc, and in which you can hear all the instruments decent!

I just use my laptop's internal mic and Audacity.

Zoom makes a great one, our bass player has one and while it likes bright rooms, it can deliver a good sound and is mp3 based.

the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

I've heard good things about the Boss Micro BR:

Don't forget the corn. It's nutritious, delicious, and ribbed for her pleasure.

I'm sure this is not exactly what you're looking for, but maybe I could get you interessted in a digtech jamman.

I got one about a week ago, and have to say I love it!
if it's just for your singer to have something to rehearse on at home it should easily do the trick.
you could either record just the rythem guitar for example (which should be enough to sing along IMO), you could use the overdub function to add the other instruments, or you could, what I didn't try out yet, make use of it's mic-preamp, connect a decent microphone to it and record the whole band during rehearsal.

sure it's not a pure recorder, but I'd not be surprised if you get an acceptable quality out of this unit, and it would be of use for you in many other ways.
great training unit and it could be really helpful to try out new ideas during the writing process.

it's not all that expensve, saves on CF-cards and even has an USB-jack built in.
it records mono in 44.1khz 24 bit, built in metronomn with different sounds and adjustable counts (?), easy to use...

maybe worth a thought, at least I can recommend without feeling bad at all...
