  • Wacken Open Air - asking for advice on which bands to see

well, the title says it all.
I'm going to WOA again this year and as usual I don't know half of the bands that play there.
but I do know what happens; I go there, spend a whole lot of time on the camping ground (even though it's an amazingly good time usually... ) and later, when I get back home, someone hands CDs to me and I'm like "wow, wtf?" and have to see I missed something couple of days ago...
now your job is to save me from that!!

    the billing this year is;

    Aborted
    Amon Amarth
    Die Apokalyptischen Reiter
    Arch Enemy
    Atheist
    Battlelore
    Bloodthorn
    Born from Pain
    Caliban
    Carnivore
    Celtic Frost
    Children of Bodom
    D'espairs Ray
    Danko Jones
    Dezperadoz
    The Dogma
    Ektomorf
    Emperor
    End Of Green
    Fear Factory
    Finntroll
    Fleshgore
    Gammay Ray
    Hellfueled
    In Extremo
    Korpiklaani
    Krieger
    Krypteria
    Lake Of Tears
    Legion of the Damned
    Mambo Kurt
    Metal Inquisitor
    Ministry
    Morbid Angel
    Motörhead
    MSG
    Mystic Circle
    Nevermore
    Opeth
    Orphanded Land
    Primal Fear
    Rose Tattoo
    Scorpions
    Six Feed Under
    Soilwork
    Soulfly
    Subway to Sally
    Transilvanian B.C.
    Uli Jon Roth
    Victory
    Vreid
    WE
    Whitesnake
    Wintersun

So far I know I'm trying to see Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, Fear Factory, Finntroll, Gamma Ray, In Extremo and Soilwork (I'm just curious who In Flames is bashing all day... ).

what would you be seeing if you were going there?
what do you think would be worth a try?

and last but not least; how are the chances I'm gonna see some JCFers there?

I'm gonne leave on wednesday, so I'd be glad for all kind of hints or recommendations!!
    thanks a lot///micha

My pick from that lot would be:

Amon Amarth - Do not miss (if you're into death metal)
    Die Apokalyptischen Reiter
    Celtic Frost
Emperor - the best black metal band ever IMO
    Hellfueled - Do not miss!
    Ministry
Motörhead - why isn't this on your list
    MSG
    Nevermore - Do not miss!!!!!!
    Opeth - hmmm, nice
Orphaned Land - Great oriental death metal
    Soulfly
    Uli Jon Roth
    Whitesnake

Plus all the obvious ones you already wrote!

Wot no Onkel Tom this year?

    Have fun by the way!

+1 for Motörhead, Nevermore, and Opeth... No Cannibal Corpse this year?

Personally, I wouldn't bother with Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, or Soilwork. Those bands are all playing on sub-par albums and chances are they'll play a bunch of material from that subpar album.

Amon Amarth - Break your neck
Atheist - Worth checking out for the trippy music
Battlelore - Supposedly one of the most over the top bands out there
Carnivore - Heard great things about these guys
Celtic Frost - Have to see these guys
Emperor - Have to see these guys
Finntroll - Another fun band to listen to while drinking
Gamma Ray - My roommate says they were the best live band he's seen
Korpiklaani - They would be a fun band to listen to while drinking
Motörhead - Gotta see them at least once
Primal Fear - To hear what modern Judas Priest should sound like
Wintersun - These guys are awesome, epic and powerful.

The above list will get you a great balance of stuff. Also skip Opeth, they're boring as hell live.

I'll be there, and Baum83 will be there... this can only mean one thing:

As for bands this year, this is what I plan to see:

Aborted (they canceled their Hamburg gig as support of Cryptopsy, so I really want to catch them this time)
Arch Enemy (were good live last time in Wacken, so I'm gonna see them again)
Atheist - never thought I'd get the chance to see them live... must see for me!
Celtic Frost - I only know two songs, so I want to see what the hype is about...
Children of Bodom - this will be my fifth time seeing them live, 3rd time in Wacken
Emperor - just as with Atheist... I'm not gonna miss this!!!
                Finntroll - great fun live
Korpiklaani - what can I say...

Legion of the Damned - I need to see at least one thrash band at each Wacken Open Air
Morbid Angel - were awesome live in Hamburg... must see!
                Motörhead - well it's MOTÖRHEAD!
Nevermore - hope they get better sound this year... I've never seen them live with good sound, which is why for three years I thought they sucked! Until I bought an album of theirs...
Opeth - my fav band on album, great live in a club... I'm curious how they come across on a festival...
Scorpions - because... well just because. And because otherwise there would be no band to see on Thursday.
Wintersun - Do not miss!!! I could care less if I missed COB this time, but I HAVE TO SEE Wintersun.

So that's alot of bands right there, but why not, that's what Wacken is for IMO... I'll drink my brains out on Wednesday and Thursday and see lots of great metal on Friday and Saturday.

BTW Soilwork can be skipped IMO, I've seen them live four times and was disappointed every time. And they play at the same time as Opeth, so...

Cannibal Corpse canceled their gig at Wacken this year, so I'm glad we got Morbid Angel.

hey, that's kind of cool!! can't wait to finally meet some JCFers in person!!
I think we're gonna arrive somewhere around 1800 or so on wednesday (it's quite a trip from here actually), you got an idea when you're gonna go there? we should meet up somewhere or we could be neighbours for a couple of days...

                    with regard to motörhead;
I think I saw them twice on festivals, and they really didn't impress me much. somehow I hardly noticed when a song ended and the new one was going already...
scorpions, I just forgot about. there a classic IMO. and thursday really isn't that bizzy.
korplikaani; never heard about them... are they as humpa as I think they are?
                    really love humpa!!

well... I think I should have another look at my list then...
thanks a lot for your help guys!

oh, and I think onkel tom is gonna be there for sure.
there's just no need to put him on the list anymore...
                    he belongs to WOA.

In addition to what's already been mentioned, I'd be really curious about Victory. Maybe that's just because I woudn't have a chance in hell of ever seeing them here in the US.

We'll hopefully arrive around noon. Living in Hamburg sure has advantages... like a close distance to Wacken, for example.
That means it's near impossible that we'll be neighbours, but I'll shoot you a PM with my number so we can arrange a meeting. The "german-JCF-drunkparty", so to speak.

Motörhead... well it's just cult. And we always have alot to laugh afterwards!
Korpiklaani - yes, they are humpa! I missed them live when they played in Hamburg, but my buddies said it was an absolutely awesome party. Wacken's gotta be even better!

If you play guitar and you are a true student of the game and aspire to be the best player you could be there is only 1 stand out in that entire list...
the best guitar player that has ever lived....
the most inspiring guitarist on the planet...
the guitar player who invented the term neo-classical...
the guitar player who was shredding in the neo-classical style just a few years after The Beatles broke up!!!.....
                            The one..
