I've tried listening to Exodus and I just don't get it. Generic thrash with nothing to separate it from Sacred Reich, Kreator or any other B or even C rated thrash band.

Exodus was at the forefront of the brutal pit. Bonded by Blood wasn't generic. It was literally one of the most epic albums that had come out at the time. I love Sacred Reich and Kreator and saw them numerous times in the 80's. Exodus started the uber-violent pits that Testament took over.

I will never get why you guys in the USA never took to Annihilator and Jeff Waters the way they deserved. I've tried listening to Exodus and I just don't get it. Then you have a guy like Jeff Waters who is one of the best guitarists ever and hardly anyone buys his stuff while wanking over Exodus and going on about how Holt's so amazing.

Yeah, fair point, they weren't generic when they came out. Bands copied that sound and it became generic. They're just one of those bands we all have where you feel you SHOULD like them, but for some reason they just don't do anything for you.

Ha, well, I suppose, vaguely....but Annihilator have always had some really off-the-wall elements to their music that's very different to any other band. So they're not really generic. I think that's one reason why they never broke America actually - too much goofiness, not enough genericness! They're genericless.

I checked out Slayers new one (Repentless) lastnight on YOUTUBE , after listening to a shit ton of slayer , so I could feel the familiar groove, came to the conclusion... I'm just not down with it. This (to me) proves Jeff was the force in that band and it died with him.

I am sure if I dug through the archives, I'd find something by them that resonates with me, fact is, I'm not the big music buff I use to be, it consumed me when I was a teen into early 20's , I knew everyone and everything, just the strike of the first note ( no lyrics) of any metal band I followed, I could name the song, as everyone had their own sound. You could just tell.

I'm really liking it although it has to be said I feel almost as if I've exhausted it already. Like there's not much depth to it. Whereas the new Maiden, Annihilator and Nile albums will reward many repeated listenings.
So far though, I dig Repentless quite a bit.
"Piano Wire" is one of Jeff's songs BTW, you can really hear the stylistic difference from Kerry's writing IMO.

Yeah , I know Piano Wire was Jeff's, donno man just didn't dig that album. I've never had to let a Slayer album "grow on me" and I'm not about to now. Somethings missing and we already know what it is. Glad you're digging those other albums man. I didn't like the new Exodus album either, classic line up was on it and it as well just did nothing for me. I know it sounds like I'm probably burnt out, but that's not it at all, those classic albums move me... I can put on Exodus - Only Death Decides off Impact is Imminent & immediately your head starts bobbin, same with Slayer - Chemical Warfare or Megadeth- Hook in Mouth. Point is (with the exception of Chemical Warfare) these are B-side songs and classic B-side material blows A-side material away today IMO.

Bonded by Blood was as epic as Reign in Blood or Ride the Lightning back in the day. It sounds generic now because so many bands have copied all of their sounds. Back in that era, Speak English or Die was generic, but regarded as very epic as well. Pantera was generic before Dime.

I dunno, I was part of the whole Bay Area Thrash thing as it was happening so I remember it in sequence. The LA Glam thing was just a little bit before my time.


If you want to talk about metal bands nobody ever really cared for, Agent Steel was really great to see, they should rank right up there with Annihilator or whatever bands you like.

I agree with that statement.

Speak English or Die (SOD) to me was generic, I'm not saying I didn't like it or keep up with them, because I did, as well as those members main bands MOD (Billy Milano), Anthrax ( Charlie, Scott) , Nuclear Assault ( Dan Liker) Both of Milano bands were generic , few good tunes here and there tho and comedic.

Pantera was generic before Dime.

I've always preferred Jeff's songs, but Kerry's no slouch.
He was nice enough to me and my wife when we briefly met him at Mayhem Fest in July. I'm about 5'5" and he's not much taller.
I'll have to pick up Repentless some time this weekend.
