  • Sweet AK 74 find

Out with a buddy and ended up in a gun store as usual and saw this primo old school Bulgarian circle 10 mil surp parts kit on a Nodak Spud receiver.
5.45X39 with the Bulgarian hammer forged MG barrel.Blued barrel and receiver too no cheezy paint.
The price was ridiculously fair so I brought it home.
The old guy that owns the store was more into the hunting rifles and cowboy guns so he had no idea how to price military type weapons.
I had been looking for one of these for a few years with the wood furniture and not the polymer.
Really glad to finally find one.

Very nice. Have you fired it yet?

I did the opposite; when I got my Chinese SKS a couple of years ago, it had the original wood stock. I installed a tan polymer tactical stock, the retractable type.

I like the wood on an AK for some reason but my Polish circle 11 underfolder has the plum polymer furniture.
SKS's look great with polymer archangel stocks so I can go either way with an SKS.
Heading out to the range today and put the 74 thru its paces.

Not trying to be an ass, but do you actually mean AK-47 instead of AK-74? I just now caught that. I'm not super well-versed in military rifles, so I wasn't sure.

And let us know how she fires!

Very nice AK74 you lucky dog especially being on the Nodak receiver and blued.

Power tube, AK47 = 7.62x39 AK74 = 5.45x39 The Russians changed up the AK in the early '70's with a smaller cartridge.

Took it out today and it was flawless.
Put around 500 rounds thru it and being the first 5.45X39 I have ever shot it was very pleasant shooting.
Very low recoil and smooth as butter.
I had heard all the horror stories about Century built guns having the wrong barrels in them and each round key holing.
All target holes at 50 yards were round and fist sized groups out of 30 rounds fired,I'll take that any day.
I was able to hit 12 in steel targets out at 150- 200 yards easily.
Had to lower the front sight just a hair to get to combat zero but that was no problem.
Real happy with the gun overall.
            Really? well screw Mark Twain.

You can't brag about how cheap you got it for without saying how much you got it for! j/k

I'm kinda meh about nodakspud receivers, but they're ok if they're built by a competent gunsmith, like yours appears to be. Nice score!

I always thought the AK-74 represented... damn, I can't even put it into words... it symbolized the other side of the end of humanity.

                  Ammo still easy to get?

Had some range time today to zero the rifle.
Was shooting low and left so a few tweaks with the front sight post and right on target.
Put on my old Soviet PSO 1 scope and dialed it in at 125 yards.
Shot out to 250 yards and kept all hits in the kill zone.

Another range day today and 5.45X39 is the way to go for me.
Nailed steel targets at 250 with ease.
