Replying to news article posts from the bot

Why not? 90% of the time the bot spams stories about some hipster making cigar box guitars or other stupid shit. I've tried to block its posts from "new post" searches.

Every once in a while it posts something interesting, but it's threads don't allow replies. Seems silly. Can they be unlocked?

Where do you see news articles? I don't think I've ever seen one.

They only appear in the "New Posts" feed as far as I know. BTW, I agree 100% with what Vass said.
