  • should I put an EMG81 in my Jackson Concorde?

Been wrestling with this for a while. I'm big into Bay Area Thrash, especially Exodus and Vio-lence.

I made a video comparing my jackson stock pickups in my Jackson vs. my Charvette that has an EMG 81 in it.
it doesn't sound that different in this video, but when I'm in the room it sounds very different.

Do you guys think I will get a sound closer to my charvette if I put the EMG81 in my Jackson???

I say yes, do it . Of coarse I love the emg 81 in the bridge in all my player guitars. I might not be a good one to ask.

The 81 does one thing and it does it well: turns any guitar into a blazing metal machine. I had one in my very first Jackson: a cheap, made in India Dinky RevPro. No surprise it woke up your Charvette sound. So keep in mind, it will probably have the same effect on any other piece of wood with a neck. I do not buy them anymore but I still have my favorite EMG-85 in my sticker guitar.

Do it. Specially if you play live or if you're planning to play live. In the bedroom, or recording something, the EMG sound by itself is not THAT great. But in the mix, with mondo frequencies fighting for their spaces, EMG excels. Good thing is: you can and MUST (in my opinion) dial that GAIN knob back. Cleaner distorted tone, live, will make your guitar's tone more audible. And the 81 still has lots and lots of aggressiveness and sustain. (Thrash player here ).

It took me a while to warm up to the 81, and the first little while that I had it I was desperate to get rid of it. To the point I actually picked up a used Blackout to swap into it's place.

Thankfully in the meantime I asked around about it, and got some tips from the guys here and spent some more time getting it dialed and I don't regret it.
I have it in the bridge of my KE3 and I use it for everything from Metallica to ac/DC, blink 182 etc... and i enjoy it a lot. I'd say go for it 100%.

Pro Tip, the EMG 81 REALLY likes having the SPC mid boost. You can use it to replace your tone knob.
