  • Drilling through maple veneer finish

I need to drill a few holes in a trans finish Soloist to make it GK ready (I already have one guitar with that awkward GK3 wart and don't want another). Will drilling holes through a maple veneer cause issues similar to Joel's doughnut Warrior?

It shouldn't do, but i'd lay down some tape over where you plan on drilling to prevent any cracking in the lacquer.

I don't know the doughnut warrior story, but use a brad point bit for an extra clean finish.

Presumably, the same would apply to solid finishes too?

+1 on the brad tip and masking tape. The brad will index better and the masking tape will help prevent chips. For any painted or non-painted surface.
