  • Value of Old USA Soloist: J 0162

Hi, I have a Jackson USA Soloist I've had for a while. The serial number is J 0162. Its in really great shape and I was wondering if anyone had an idea on what its worth? (Gold hardware, Kahler bridge, Gotoh tuners, ebony fretboard, MOP dot inlays, 2 HB's, body is 9/10) I know what I paid for it back in the 80's, but have no idea what its worth today.

There seem to be a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum and I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks!

Is it still Cherry Sunburst, or has it been refinished?

Can you post a pic of it?

      Does it have fingerboard binding?

Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

It would probably sell for around $1,200. It might fetch a little more if it had the shark inlays. The Kahler is what kills the value here. An early Soloist like that with a Floyd would easily command more than $1,500.

It's a tough and unpredictable time to sell guitars right now, though. I've seen bidding wars over some guitars, while many other really nice ones don't move at all.

You do understand that a Soloist means neck-through-body?

No sharkies sinks the price IMO.

Don, not sure, but if you're going by the "strat" description in the logbook (which J0162 has), lots of early Soloists had that. Log book scans here: >link<

Yeah, I don't believe the Soloist name existed yet at that early date. With a "J" serial number, it's definitely a neckthru.

No, I was going by the fact that he's a new member and most newbies don't understand the difference between soloist and dinky.

Also, the dot inlays are a lot more common on bolt ons.

Yeah, but bolt ons didn't have letters in the serial number either.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have a 87 King V that I may consider parting ways with to help fund another purchase. It has a few chips in the custom black splatter finish but overall good condition. What would this guitar be worth?

Of course, you're not aiming to circumvent the classified rules... Worth depends on the specs(custom or student, kahler or floyd etc etc), plus what the splatter looks like. Post a pic...

I thought they all were customs then. It has a Floyd, non recessed, full neck binding, EMG 81,81's

"Custom" and "Student" were just terms they used back then to describe the guitars & give some basic pricing in the catalogs. "Custom" meant it had a bound ebony board & sharkies, "student" meant unbound rosewood fretboard & dots.

Here it is in an old pricelist:

OK then, I also have a 84 San Dimas RR Student with a Kahler. What's that worth?
