As far as a preference, my basswood/burgundy one has served me well for 15+ years, and after trying out EVERYTHING else out there I decided to just get more surfcasters. (one day I'll have the distinction of owning all 6 finishes) The black one came next, another basswood one, and the tone is great on that one as well. It is strung with lighter strings (.009 vs. .011) and therefore plays a bit ligher and 'shred'-ish.
I have only recently acquired the 2 mahogany/maple ones, and only one of them is set up. It plays AMAZINGLY, and has a slight but noticable difference in feel. Since I've been recording for the last 6 months, I haven't actually had a chance to A/B them in my concert setup to tell if there is any clear winner.
Trem vs. hardtail: all mine are 12-strings, so I've not had any experience with the trems. The C-stoptail ones like yours are what I would seek out if I were in the market for a 6er. That thing looks like pure sex!
Update to my surfy collection: I just scored 12-string #5 off the 'bay: a NEW OLD STOCK '94 in SURF GREEN! (anxiously awaiting delivery- fedex ground is PAINFULLY slow when they've got something you want)
I've been searching for a surf green one for AGES... and finally found the holy grail!
If anyone is interested in joining the surfy12 owner's club, I may be able to help out, as I'll need to divest one of the other 4 to make room in my finances for this one. A PM could get your membership on the way...

SOTD - Nice score on the new surfcaster! Obviously, I approve of the color. Gotta ask - what kind of music do you play/what's your band set up? I'm intrigued by the fact that you just play 12-strings!!!

Why's he a dope? He is a new JCF sponsor. He does have his own section of the forum now and should post his sale items there, though.

Silver- thanks! I'm getting pics ready for a NGD thread, so prepare yourself. This guitar blows my MIND!

As far as my music goes, I play & sing for Elemental- a 3 piece alt/space/art-rock outfit here in Utah. We're hot & heavy in the middle of recording full-length album #2, so our web presence doesn't get all the attention it deserves at the moment. Here's some links if'n you're up for a listen- let me know what you think:

Main website: http://www.theelemental.com will get you sound clips, discography, and the merch store etc...
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/elementalthemusic has full-length songs from our demo, 1st album, and I think a christmas song is still on there.
Facebook is probably the most active of our portals at the moment: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Elemental/84478404758 just because it is quick and easy to post there.

Finally found some info on the nut- Looks like they are 'phenolic compound' according to the 1991 product spec sheet.

GOod find. Hmmm... So they're likely some sort of phenolic resin I wouild think: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenolic_resin I suspected that they weren't just plastic. I was going to swap out the nut for a bone nut, but maybe I'll just leave it stock. Thx for the info.
