  • NGD + pics: 2000 Ibanez RG570 Gray Nickel

    Specifications: http://ibanez.wikia.com/wiki/RG570_(1997%E2%80%932002)

Got this 2000 Ibanez RG570 Gray Nickel back in January 2017 for CAD$300 (approximately USD$226 at the time) with useless gigbag. A couple cosmetic nicks and dings, but structurally sound. I'm told that the color, Gray Nickel, is Nissan/Infiniti's HAA paint code (sahara sandstone beige). Now I know what color of touch-up pen to buy at the auto parts store to cover up the dings.

Finally had time recently to disassemble, clean, set it up, and take pics. And it kills.

As an exercise and experiment, I stripped the gloss finish off the neck and refinished it in gunstock oil and wax as per Ben Eller's procedure to replicate those found on Music Man guitars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiDm4JKtICk

The only differences were that I stopped at 220 grit, which I still find to be smooth enough, and I used Howard Feed-N-Wax wood preserver as my wax since I had trouble finding Birchwood Casey Gunstock Wax in Canada.

While the new neck finish looks attractive (the oil-and-wax really brings out the grain in the wood), feels great, and plays fast, I can't say the effort was worth it. The procedure was simple and straightforward but it's a big investment of time, amounting to hours of active labor + waiting time for each coat to cure. This is compared to my normal practice of just using steel wool, a couple minutes to apply, to degloss necks on my bolt-on guitars which results in similarly fast playing necks. This is subjective of course.

I also swapped the magnets in the neck and bridge humbuckers as per LonePhantom's procedure: http://www.lonephantom.com/2011/09/p...-v7v8-pickups/ I accidentally damaged the neck pickup wires in the pickup housing, and accidentally damaged the bridge pickup wires in the pickup housing of my 1998 Ibanez RG570 Iron Pewter, and I'll need to replace those pickups, but that's another story. Even though I have two semi-useless guitars, the pickups that work are AWESOME after the magnet swap.

On to the pics. Full sized versions in my new Imgur account: http://notp1.imgur.com/

Now that's a kick ass axe!!! Nice score!

I found it cool that you used Howard's Feed-N-Was on the neck. I use Howard's Feed-N-Wax on some of my old rifle stocks. It's orange smell is awesome!
