Running through the available finishes yesterday, I kept thinking things like "yeah I like that one, but..." It occured to me that there's a bunch of little detail-like things that, IMHO, would improve some stuff for J/C.
No, I don't mean things like "why can't they make hardware color or fretboard woods an option without going full custom shop". I consider those significant changes in the building process and/or business practices. More "style" type stuff...
- Hot Rod Flames graphic. I've always really liked this one, but never quite loved it. I think it would go from "kinda' cool" to "killer" if they would make several flames overlap each other, instead of one big flame. And use more yellow and orange, and less white in the paint scheme. Also, when it's on a HSS guitar, they sometimes don't paint complete flames in between the PUs.
- Snakeskin. This is one I've always loved. But the current grey/black scheme is boring. It's always looked better in green/black or brown/black, IMHO. Then again, they've done a few copperheads, which is a stunningly cool version IMHO.
- Ghost flames. This is one of the coolest, IMHO. But, by doing the body the same color as the flames, they seem too transparent on the "normal" versions. The 3D effect isn't quite as intense. Then again, I'm sure the more "advanced" version is more time-intensive and expensive, so...
- Not enough cool candy metallic colors. There's no candy apple red, candy purple, etc. There are finishes that are similar to these, but not the same.
- I wish they'd give a little more variety in PUs. It seems like JBs and Jazzes are on every model. They could use a few more models with standard different Duncans, like the Custom or Distortion. Heck, I'd like to see a couple of models with standard Dimarzios. (Nicely, they went different stuff on the Charvel line, though.)
- It'd be nice if they offered one or two models with ash bodies, too. Thinking back over history, this seems to be very rare on J/Cs.
...So, what do you guys think? Anything else like this?
