    log book shows KK Downing.
But KK Downing denies ever owning it.
And Red says 'we didn't keep records'.

Great. Just as Fender found the closet the log books were in... we get told how unreliable they were.

I believe it was originally built for KK, but he never took possession of it.

              No hope needed.
You focused on the sarcasm. But the important stuff was:

The log books aren't reliable... if they ever existed in the first place.

There is/was some way for them (Jackson / Fender) to trace some form of history at least, for the later 80's guitars. They just won't do it... But like you said, if the old employees can attest to poor reliability of whatever records they have/had, then what's the point I guess...

maybe someday somebody will look at the early '80s stuff with microscopes and x-rays looking for some tell-tale marks in the wood or something for authentication and dating. until then...

They exist. I had to search back through old emails and found 9 pages from the books, I must have deleted the rest. I've only got from serial number J0501 through J0727.
