  • Home Recording - getting started (Software)

Hi, I need some advice again.
I'm not sure where I should post these kind of questions, I'm actually mostly about software this time.
Amps and Effects sounded closest to me so here you go...

I have a good offer on an E530 preamp at the moment, watched some clips on youtube and found they all record with "cab impulses", software effetcs and stuff nowadays, which is totally beyond me.

I'm still using my old V-Amp Pro and Audition3 for recordings and the result is, well not close to something like this to be honest, so I thought about trying some new tricks.

Is there any way I can stay with Audition and take advantage of these impulses and such? It's easy to use and I somehow got used to it...

What would you recommend for recordings?
    Where do I start?

So far I record without drums as well, which has been buggin me big time for ages now...
Any easy to use software for this purpose as well?

I'm just looking for some good software solutions to do some recordings.
I'd love to be able to adjust the sound after recording a quite dry signal, maybe add or swap some effects, programm some drums, to make it sound decent.
At the moment I dial in a sound, record it and I'm done with it, whether it fits to the rest I'm about to record later or not, which is quite limiting.

My Computer is still pretty new, but aside from kicking some alien ass I rarely make use of it.
I use Win7 64bit, the hardware is an AMD X6, 4gigs of RAM (thinking about going to 8 soon, RAM is cheap at the moment), HDD space is not an issue as well.
I'm going from preamp to mixer, to an UCA202 soundcard which is working ok for me, I'm just not happy with the sound anymore comparing myself to what others can do with a computer today...

So if anyone has some great software for my problems (guitar sound or drums) in mind or know some good sites/guides which will help me through this, I'd be glad to listen.
Wouldn't hurt if the software was for free , but sure I'd consider others as well.

I'm not a total disaster with computers, but I'm no wizzard as well and I have rarely experiences, newer than ten years, so please keep that in mind.

Excuse my vague approach on this topic, but as I said, I don't know much about it, probably missed the last decade's progress and it's a huge field. I really didn't know where to start on my own.
Advice would be appreciated! Thank you!

www.reaper.fm (not expensive and the forum is good if you are a newbie)

www.toontrack.com ---> ezdrummer for me (I also have Steve Slate drums but prefer ezDrummer).

And a bunch of freeware VST for me. See these sites:
