  • Sperzel Locking Tuners or a Floyd?

I'm a longtime Floyd user (since about 1985) and I recently got a Fender Stratocaster HSS. I love the guitar but the standard Fender whammy bridge, as we all know, sucks.

So how good are the Sperzels? I also happen to have an original Floyd in black on another guitar I don't really care about (except as a decoration).

    So what do you think?

If you setup a vintage trem right, you don't need locking tuners - IMO. However, even the best setup, locking tuners and a roller nut will not allow you to go - dive-bomb, hold up the guitar by the trem bar - nuts.

So if you want crazy - floyd it.

If you're talking about mild vibrato use, moderate bombs and pulls, then yes, you can achieve that with a v-trem.

BTW - are you talking about a regular 6-hole trem or the fender 2 post?

Sperzels are excellent locking tuners. I install them on just about every non-Floyd guitar I have, and are or have built. Just recently I bought a Robin Trower signature Strat and they come stock on the guitar with the 6 screw vintage Fender bridge. Works great.

It's currently the 6-hole stock Fender trem.

I've just about decided to go the Floyd route -IF- I can find someone locally to install it. I honestly don't know if it'll need routing or not. I'm supposed to talk to a guy about it tomorrow. I also don't remember if I have the locking nut or not, since I just did a drop-in replacement of a JT-6 with it. If not, I'll need to order one pretty quickly.

try colouring the strings at the nut with a No. 2 pencil. (or big bends nut sauce). and make sure the strings are stretched decently and you shouldn't have any problems with the standard V-trem.

Of course, that doesn't solve the "problem" of having an original Floyd sitting around unused....
