  • S.D. Blackouts

I've been using EMG 81(b) and 85(n) set in my dk2t and dr3. I am going to try out the Blackouts, and wondering if anyone with a similar setup(EMG 81+85) has swapped them out, what there opinion good or bad is? How do the two sets compare? Also wondering about the newer ahb-2's, who's tried them out and what there opinion is?

Why not try reversing the 81 and 85? Maybe try an EMG60 in the neck?

I'm not an EMG guy, but I have a pair of axes with them and enjoy using them for thrash metal (Metallica, etc).

Man the blackouts are heaps better in my opinion, they are fuller and have more output yet still retain all the clarity, and sound mega brutal with lots of distortion.

I don't dislike the EMG's, I purchased a guitar with dimarzios, and they need to go. I was wondering what other guitarists that have used both the EMG's and Blackouts thought. And yea, I have been heared good things the Blackouts.

Never tried EMGs, but Metallica use them and have a shit tone.
Blackouts on the other hand, I have in my RR3 and I sound great.

I've heard the Blackout bridge comes close to the 81,
and the Blackout neck comes close to the 85.

But did anybody try a Blackout bridge in the neck position, since EMG 81 in neck is quite common.

Don't know about that, but a few people have said they like the Blackout neck in the bridge position!

I went today checked them out, fortunately the shop I went to had a guitar loaded with a set of SD's. Compared them with a ZW set in another axe and felt the tone of the SD's was better, but the PUP's were in totally different guitars, with the SD's in a much higher end one, which would also effect the tone. But, I did bills this morning and I'll have to wait week or two. It's that stupid money thing again.

I hear you man I am kind of wanting to try the EMG_X 85 but I have wait until next payday since all of this on went to bills. ANd I pre fer the Blackout Neck model in the bridge better than the Bridge model. The Blackout(b) bass can be a little overpowering.

So you tried them reversed like the 85 in the bridge, and 81 in the neck. How did the bridge humbucker sound in the neck?

I put the Blackout(b) in the neck. It is very similar to a 81, but with a better tone IMO. I would still prefer a lower output pickup in the neck, it sounds better when playing clean, but if you like the 81 neck you should like Blackout(b) in the neck.
