  • Pickup wiring

Hello all. I have a question regarding hum / hum pickup wiring. I am wanting to get the SD Phat Cats and was wondering if I will get that "quack" tone in the middle position if I get the neck pup in the RWRP ad the bridge standard - similar to that of a strat in the 2 and 4 positions? Thanks.

I'm no expert, but I've been told that strat quack has a lot to do with the distance between the adjacent pickups. That, added the fact that P90s have their own distinct sound, makes me think that your guitar isn't going to get a true strat quack. Here's a pretty good explanation (it's in Word format, for some reason):

Thanks for the link. Ok, so it will "cluck" then .

But I also thought that the reason there is no 60 cycle hum in the strat's 2 and 4 position is due to the middle pickup being RWRP????

Sorry, I didn't read that part where he talks about them being in phase. I was focusing on the part about position. I disagree with what he says about them needing to be in phase. Modern strats with a middle RWRP pickup for hum cancelling have the quack. Here's a discussion about it from a Fender forum:

Thanks for the link. So, does this mean that humbucking pickup coils have one of the coils reversed?

Yes, that's how they work. Electromagnetic interference is cancelled out because the windings are reversed. The interference is only affected by winding direction, not magnet polarity. The signal from the strings is affected by the winding direction and the polarity of the magnet, so when both the winding and the polarity are reversed, the noise is cancelled without cancelling the signal from the strings.
