"tanned" or just filthy?

The back of my DK1's neck looks tanned. Much darker than any brand new import Dinky I've owned. Does this come with age, or neglect (lack of cleaning, left in damn or areas where climate changes often)? I can even see the wood's fine grain lines and scuffs in places. I have a feeling this is gonna take more than just your average guitar polish. What can I use to make it look bright (and possibly even) again?

I did try to take photos of this, but I often find, regardless of stand-alone camera or camera-phone just doesn't represent what I'm actually seeing.

Is it an oiled neck? If so it is probably just from age and the oil from hands.

Mine is the same way. I bought it used and don't know if someone "oiled" it.
