  • Will a neck swap improve tone?

    Hi guys,

I had my guitar's body replaced with an ash one 6 months ago. Though I totally noticed a difference in tone, I somehow have a feeling that the neck isn't vibrating and resonating with the body (even with the old body).

It's a Jackson JS-30 RR flying V that now has an Ash body and will totally morph into something else if I do get the neck replaced. It has a Seymour Duncan SH-6 set for pickups.

Am I correct in assuming I'll get that added richness, bloom, sustain and oomph if I swap out the neck for a new neck with better wood and construction?

So if you get a new neck, then you will have just bought a new guitar, basically.
You will get some tone difference, but how much, is up in the air.
What kind of wood is your current neck, and what is the fretboard?

the cut of wood, the type of wood, and the style of truss rod of a neck does affect the tone.

      form my experience.
-vintage truss rods leave more wood but have more of a vintage or what i like to call "plinky" sound.

-while a modern double expanding rod yeilds a little more sustain and sound a little more mellow.

-1/4 sawn maple produces brighter tones and more stability. which is nice for heavyier gage strings and unfinished necks. 1/4 sawn also tends to go better with modern truss rods since its more stable and needs more pressure to adjust.

-flat sawn is more pliable, has a mellower tone, and produces prettier grain patterns like flame and birdseye. flat sawn tends to go better with vintage truss rods because its not as stable and does not need as much pressure to adjust.

-rosewood boards subdue the highs a little bit but also add a sizzle to the top end of the tone.

-ebony is about the same brightness as maple but adds a "spank" to the high end.
