  • Tube Positions for a 5150

I was looking at replacing the preamp tubes in my 5150. I checked Eurotubes and they mention using a balanced 12AX7 for the V5 position. It outlined what each of the preamp tubes do but what I want to know is if I am looking at the tube preamp section which tube is V1, V2, and so on.
    Damn, I love this Interweb.

V5 should be closest to the power tubes, it is the phase inverter (pi).

A "balanced" tube will theoretically put equal signal to both halves of the power stage, as well as equal load from the preamp stages. It's all a matter of taste. Try a few different ones and see if it makes a difference. Most quality 12AX's will do alright.
The perfect balance is snake oil, in my opinion.
