  • SD with new pickup magnet - Alnico 8

Check out this new pickup from Seymour Duncan. Per the ad, it has a new type of magnet.

I've never heard of Alnico 8 before, but I'd sure like to hear a clip of this.

Yeah, they're all the rage now on the Duncan Forum. They did a special run for forum members last year called the Crazy 8... it had parallell axis pole pieces (like their PATB-1, PATB-2 and PATB-3 models, but with an Alnico 8 magnet). There was such a great response to it that Duncan decided to make a new production model pup with an A8. You can pretty much order anything you want through the Duncan Custom Shop, including Alnico 3 and Alnico 4 magnets. Guys swap magnets on that forum and experiment like crazy.
Do a search, and I'm sure you'll find clips of just about anything. http://www.seymourduncan.com/forum/

Agreed. Duncan forum is a great place for info. Not something I normally post on as a lot of it goes right over my head, but it's still a pretty cool place.

Indeed. I've been a member there for a few years, but I really don't post all that much either.

Judging by sound an Alnico 8 in a J-90 would be very interesting. Might sound better than the J-90c even. I'll have to try that myself soon.

Joe is right the folks on the Duncan forum are nuts over swapping magnets and modding pole pieces etc. I can speak for myself as I am one of the biggest nuts over there.

Bill Lawrence has been using Alnico-8's for years in his hum-cancelling singles. Stan Hinesley has a hot humbucker set (neck and bridge complements) called the Rogue, featuring Alnico-8's.
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

Wow, thanks for the info. This is all news to me. I nosed around the SD forum a bit, and from what I read, it sounds like the Crazy 8 and Alternative 8 are going to be fantastic pickups.

                  Really? Who are you?

If anyone's interested, they're doing another forum pickup. The voting is going on just now, looks like it'll be a "P-90 voiced single coil" pup.

Fusion1 over there I think I remember seeing your name over there Martin Barre. I love Martin Barre's tone btw. Cool name and avatar you got there.

Yeah I hope the p-90 strat single coil wins out and is ultimately do-able. Still should pull off Blackmoore-ish tones I'd say.
