    Whats the advantage of each? What so special about rails?

    If I recall correctly, the rail was supposed to accomodate string bending.
    (Old style, not trem...)
    So, as the string moved across the polepieces, it wouldn't lose volume.

    Also, blades don't have to be "pole spaced" for different spacings between different bridges.

      On a lot of single-coils the poles are the actual magnets. Which create a stronger pull on the strings, causing dead spots if you have the pickup adjusted too close.

      There aren't too many humbuckers built like this (but Swineshead does build one called the AMP — for "Alnico Magnet Polepieces"), instead placing the magnet(s) on the underside of the coils and transferring the field through adjustable or non-adjustable non-magnetc studs or rails.

      It's all just a matter of how each creates a magnetic field, what kind of pattern, what kind of coverage, what kind of adjustability. A lot of variables in there, but it really just comes down to what the damned thing sounds like.
