  • How can you tell a broken pot?

What problem do they cause? Loss of gain and volume? No volume? Or what?
    I wish my hair-color was EDS :/

    Scratchy noise when operated.
No sound coming thru (100% loss of gain), (gain=volume).
No attenuation possible - always full volume (not likely to happen).
Drop-outs when turned - sudden jumps from low to high volume.
Bad soloing (never happened for me, though).

Cause you already can't play solos, we all know that

My soloist has a push/pull tone pot, to split the coils. But the gain's very low, and it sounds like the neck pickup even if I play on the bridge pickup. Lots of loss or trouble. And nothing changes when I turn the tone knob clock or counterclock-wise.So the chances are, the vol pot might be working but the tone pot's probably broken, right?

I have no idea what the parts inside a pot is called in English, but it sounds like the "movable arm" on the pot has lifted from the carbon or completely broken off, leaving the pot with one, static ohm value.

          I play like Yngwie. EOD.

Sounds like a wiring problem to me.

I was kinda hoping that Ilker had already OK'd the wiring, and therefore asked for pot advice. A broken wire would be much more likely, I agree

Just chance the pots and wiring. They don't cost much anyway.

But isn't he the guy from Norton Utilities? You know, the genius who made the leading tool for Windows back in the day? It always struck me as weird that he ended up on this forum...

Actually, he had wrote some of the early tools for DOS and was a writer for PC Magazine. I think by the time Windows came along he was just the picture on the box.

The problem's probably with the wiring, I'm gonna do the wiring again, but first, I need to make sure if the pot is broken or not.

Hell, I think I'm gonna move the vol pot to the tone pot location, and go marty-style.I'm a 3-fingers player, anyway.
