Single conductor pup Q

I have a single conductor pickup I am about to put in the neck position on
my Jackson. It's a SD SH-1 '59 and has just an outer shield for a ground
and a single insulated wire. The diagram I have says to solder it to the 3-
way switch and solder the shielding to the ground prong on the switch.

My question is how will the volume control work with the pickup this way?
It seems like it would be an on/off kind of thing. I know technology in
1959 wasn't that advanced but volume was one of the early features on
electric guitars, right? At least it didn't come with cloth insulation.

Will the volume control have an effect on the neck pup?

There's a terminal on one side of the switch with a ground. On mine it is
ganged with the other grounds on the back of the tone pot. It seems like
since the wire is going to the switch anyway, that ground would be easier
to tie to.

If you have enough lead just solder the hot to the switch and run the braid over the vol pot and solder to the pot it just looks cleaner that way.You can do it either way.

Do you have other pickups on the guitar besides the one? Sounds like you have a master volume setup and volume control will be tied to all the pickups.

since there's a switch, he's probably got more than one pickup in there.

llocust, to answer your volume question, when you connect the pickup to the switch, there will be a wire coming from the center (pinched together and soldered) terminals. this will go to the input of the volume pot (unless you've got a tone, too...follow the diagram). that's how you'll get your volume.

so with a 1 volume, 3 way switch, the pickups are wired to the switch (not the volume pot), then the switch goes out to the input of the volume pot. cool?

Very cool. Thanks for the info. I do have two pups and a tone and vol pot with the 3-way switch. So the vol will control whichever pup is active (maybe 'on' is a better word since they're passive pups) or both.
