  • RS Guitarworks upgrade kit

just installed the Modern Upgrade kit in my 06 gibson flying V.

    back story:
got the guitar, plays great. stock pups - dull as shit. baught a pickguard for it, short toggle, and dual EMG 81s dropped it in. got me thourgh some shows. but i didn't want emgs, i'm trying to get away form them. put the stock pickguard with pups back in. just too dull - couldn't handle it. put the emg's back in again. got through a couple more shows. put it in the closet. and played a different guitar for a while. played it at a gig last friday, emg's gotta go!

ordered the modern upgrade kit from RS Guitarworks 40 bucks shipped. 2 "super pots", 1 tone, 1 RS cap, and a bit of wire. a little pricy but...

    Review:
HELL YEAH! really brought the guitar to life. now it sounds like i felt it should have the day it arrived. why is gibson using such shitty electronics? anyway. i highly recommend their electronics. a little expensive, but cheaper than buying new pickups. which i have to say, now that i can actually hear these gibson pickups, they sound pretty darn good.

What a story. I'm glad it worked for you. I have been replacing quite a few controls lately with RS stuff, including newly built guitars. My recent Gibson Les Paul's ('57 Gold Top VOS and '68 LPC Flame Top Reissue) have very good electronics and I will not touch those controls. I don't know if the difference lies between Custom Shop or production guitars? The electronics in the two Custom Shop guitars I have are perfect.

They do make a difference to my ears as well. I put one in a Mockingbird and have a vintage strat kit (pots, wire, 5-way and output jack) for a USA Fender parts mutt in progress (waiting on the pickguard to come in).

Some of the electronics in USA made guitars as well as to be expected imports are really shabby and sub-par. As much as players spend on tone on the amp and pickup side of things I'm surprised that more and more folks arent looking at the pots & switches they are using.

most people are dumb, and the companies know this. a few bucks here and there on the "hidden" components is more money in their pockets.

DR I'm glad you like the kits and welcome to the club.Come Monday my new/old shitty tele is getting an RS tele kit.
Get on their forum and let Roy and Scott and the rest of the guys know how much you like the kit.Its the best bang for the buck if you want great tone.
Hell Buddy Guy and a heap of others use the kits.
Before I swap pickups I'll try a kit and most of the time I keep the stockers.Depends which guitar tho'.

yeah i need to get a tone and cap for my white wayne viv. i've got a super pot in all of my passives now. you know, even though i'm pulling most of my EMG's out, i wish RS would make a super pot for EMG's. i really like the friction of their pots and the sound quality is great! i think a lot of emg users would pick them up cause they'd no longer have the problem of accidently turning the volume down.

I have one of the first super pots in my Charvel bullseye mutt and it is nice not having to worry about hitting the vol knob.
