• What Are Your 3 Top Technique Tips

If you had to give 3 tips to someone about technique, what would you give? For example, when doing pull-offs, make sure the anchored finger keeps the string still, etc.

I picked up playing again about 10 months ago and I want to make sure that I am not falling into bad habits.

RELAX and stay loose, you'll play better

Accuracy is more important than speed so take your time...speed will come with practice

Don't be afraid to experiment, it will help you find your own way of doing things and you may discover something new. That will make your playing more unique.

Forget technique, at the end of the day what it sounds like is more important.

1. Stay loose as possible, and always breath. The body needs Oxygen!

2. Always work towards perfecting your techniques so you don't have to work any harder than necessary. Anymore tension or effort than what is needed is bad.

3. Practice! Get into the habit of practicing on a regular schedule and developing discipline.

Number 3 is definitely my weak point.

1) Dynamics - whether it is volume, attack, speed, vibrato, etc.; varying things in the right places adds character and life to not just your solos, but all of your playing.
2) Slide or bend into notes when possible, as opposed to just picking the note;
3) Practice and Play out as much as possible

1-finger strength-bend notes with all your fingers at the first and second frets. it gets painful but it helps.
2-vibrato- shake the fukk out of notes and chords. gives you a little hot sauce on your playing.
3-use a bad or sour note to your advantage. the whole fretboard is connected, so try to connect into something better after a horrific note. you will be able to use that note for something else next time.

#1 Listen to players/styles you don't normally listen to. For example Chet Atkins.

#2 Listen to other instruments piano, sax etc..

#3 Learn from the above

Fritz...

My tips may be for beginers but here is what I offer to them.

1st... Use your pinky. I do not know why so many do not. Learn to vibrato with it and bend with strength.

2nd..... alternate pick. Practice paterns for alternate picking early and you will be a better player.

3rd... work on your pick grip. Getting it right makes a big difference.

Hotrodder, I say the EXACT same thing to my nephew and his freinds right down to the sax and chet atkins. You should here them try to play take 5... ..lol

Practice standing up (scales, modes with metornome)
Practice with band frequently
Practice loud and learn the dynamics

I have seen so many good "bedroom" guitairst not know how to play on stage

1. End EVERY session playing something you enjoy.
2. Practice REALLY slowly and very gradually build speed.
3. Record yourself so you can critique your own work and have others listen as well.........

Good luck,

Chris

1. Play enough that the guitar becomes an extension of yourself, not just something you're holding.
2. Relax and have fun. Try hard but don't try too hard.
3. Always play a Charvel or Jackson!
