  • The TONE CONTROL

I have heard having no tone control really opens up the pick ups. Guess it takes away from the sound some how.

I am considering cutting the wires of the tone controls on the guitars that have them.

    Anyone ever do this?

i have recently been puting tone knobs back in my guitars.

without it, i got major feedback and the treble from the pickup was just over the top nasty. once i hooked up the tone knob, everything sounded right. just enough of everything.

now i understand why almost every guitar has them.

Another option, albeit an expensive one as opposed to just cutting the wires, would be to install a "ToneStyler" tone control. It's a 15 position passive tone control. Position 1 bypasses the tone circuit completely, and the other 14 positions have differing value capacitors which alter your tone accordingly. I installed one in one of my Carvins and really like it compared to a useless standard tone pot. Check them out on the 'net.

Some pickup/guitar combos do ok without a tone knob, while others become shrill sounding in my experience.
