Probably EMG 81. Just a guess.

I always heard James & Kirk used an EMG 81/60 or 81/81 combination, depending on who you ask.

For old Metallica, you'd be best off with a Duncan Distortion (Hammett) or Invader (Hetfield).

They didn't use EMGs until the Justice album, and James started out with dual 81s like Kirk, then he went to the 81/60.

          James - 81/60
          Kirk - 81/81

          Edit: Damn you Toejam!
I feel festive all year round. Deal with it.

You might want to also pick up a Mesa Boogie MK 2B while your at it.

Yeah but wasn't Hammett using his EMG-equipped Rhoads live from at least '86 or '87?

If you're going for Hammett's live tone you'd better glue a wah pedal to your shoe.

Marshall mosfet is more like it.

Live, yes, but did it ever get recorded on an album for solos? If it did, it would have been on the Justice album (or maybe even the $5.98 EP). All the rhythm work would have been James by himself up until the Black album.

Ultrasonic Reference 6... Great pickup but very hard to find... I think the company went belly up in 1987 or so and the last time I checked there wasn't a West Germany any longer.
