  • Soldering question

I installed Seymour Duncan Blackouts in my SLSMG.
I am having trouble getting the solder to stick to the back
of the pots though. My solder joint seems ok, then I bump it and
it lets go of the back of the pot. My other solder joints are fine, but I
just can't get the solder to stick to the back of the pot. Is there a
trick to this? I'm using the type of solder with the flux in the core.
    It's driving me nuts

How well did you prep the back of the pot?
I usually scuff it with some 800 grit and then wipe clean with alcohol before I solder.
Also, you really don't need flux with these types of solder joints.

Sound like you're iron isn't hot enough to heat up the pot so the solder will stick.. and you're not tinning it.

Don't forget to get the back of the pot so hot it melts the insides.:ROTF:

A small drop of rosin flux from a tooth pick works great. I use the liquid form, but it comes in paste as well. It works everytime and leaves the solder joint nice and shiny.

Also, some forcepts or needle nose pliers holding the wire helps keep the wire attached to the pot until it cools. This also creates a heat sink eliminating the melting wire insulation syndrome.

My Duncan Designed pickups are way better than Seymour Duncan regular pickups you fanboy.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I asked a guy at work who's an airforce reservist electrician and he said basically all the same things you guys said.

Clean and sand the back of the pot.

Tin the wire (I did this) AND tin the back of the pot (I didn't do this)

Don't drip the soider from the end of the iron, but heat
the wire and back of the pot and then feed a small amount solder

Don't put a "blob" of solder on, just enough to make the connection
                  I blobed it :-)

I'm going to ZZ Top tonight, I'll try to do this tommorow.

                  Thanks again!

Just did it and the solder joints stuck fine. Sounds great. I really think it
was sanding the back of the pot that made the biggest difference.

I had problems too when I got some pot from AllParts. I sanded the glossy coat off with some sandpaper and that worked for me too.

I saw them back in about 1992. How was it?

ZZ looked great on the youtubes from 2005...hope it was good.

Soldering: I can't seem to keep the tip from turning black and burning up, no matter how many times I clean it. And I can't seem to work with that Oatey lead free stuff, either. I have an ever dwindling supply of the old leaded that works much better.

ZZ Top were great. I had 2nd row center seats that my wife got me for our aniversary. It's definately a greatest hits show, which was fine for me.
Billy Gibbons played awesome. They really put on an entertaining show.
I have some cool pix on my camera phone. If I can figure out how to get them off it and online I'll post them in artist and there gear (doesn't have any Jackson content though)

AllParts is selling pot now?! How are the prices? Is it any good or is it just like Nebraska No-High?
