  • 18V/9V EMG Tonal difference?

Is there any tonal difference between 18v and 9v on the same EMG's used, or does it depend on how you wire it?

There is a slight difference, although it's very hard to describe. I have a guitar that I wired up for the purpose of just such a comparison, with a push-pull to be able to switch between 9v and 18v.

I feel there is slightly more bottom end to the tone on 18v, and that it feels more..."alive". However, I run a 85(b)/58(n) combo, and I'm not sure how the other pickups would be affected. According to EMG, what you get is more headroom (which I think translates into a less compressed signal - i.e. more response to pick attack).

i think the 18v makes it sound slightly thinner. so i switched back to 9v.
