  • Dead Fret

My knock off Les Paul has a dead fret (Fret Buzz) at the 15th fret high "E" if I bend it slightly there isn't any issues. I check to make sure my frets were all even with the fret rocker everything seems to be kosher..

Any evidence of one of the higher frets lifting on the treble side?

I looked for that.. but that doesn't mean it couldn't be floating slightly... Just went through it again with the rocker and re strung. I might have to take the radius block to it... I started the rocker 10, 11, 12 - 11, 12, 13 - 12, 13, 14 so forth and so on. Nothing..the setup is correct. I even tried to raise the treble side action and still it's that one fret.

try taking the back of a screwdriver (handle part) and tapping on the frets in different areas. It becomes very apparent when there's an unseated/loose fret as the tone becomes "dull" and not a tight "knock". A little crazy glue seeped (is that a word? lol!) under the side of the fret should do it. The key is to use the liquid variety and not the gel as it doesn't wick under the fret. You may still have to level the fret afterwards to get it to the right height.

The old quarter tap... never thought of that. Thanks.

Since when has fret buzz been known as "dead fret"? I thought the term was meant when two frets sound exactly the same. I had a whacky Kramer like that in the '80s, I didn't know what the hell was wrong with it (if I remember, both the 16th and 17th frets played the same exact notes). I was later told it was known as a dead fret.

Actually, Joe, that's a good name for a band, "The Dead Frets."
                "Got a crazy feeling I don't understand,
                Gotta get away from here.
Feelin' like I shoulda kept my feet on the ground
Waitin' for the sun to appear..."

It's a good term for a lot of the bands out today. :ROTF:
