Sully!? Nut Prep too shallow?

i had a neck made and already had to send it back once for the nut prep being too shallow. granted it's deeper now but still not deep enough to acheive the action i'm looking for. is there anyway i can do this myself without ruining the neck?

What kind of nut? Fender-style? Gibson-style? Floyd? It may just be a simple case of filing the nut down. (Fender or Gibson style, not Floyd) Remember, replacing the nut is a LOT cheaper than replacing the neck.

Assuming you're talking about a locking nut, I'd file the shelf, not the nut.

Check your progress often and you should be okay.
Worse comes to worse, you file too much and have to shim it.
Not a big deal.

If I get a new neck with a floyd shelf allready cut it's never deep enough so I just rout it deeper, but I have the tools and jig to do it with.

I have had this problem many times, but I always opt to grind the bottom of the nut down instead of screwing with the neck. Nuts are cheaper!

imo, i'd do one of a few things:

- send the neck (with the nut) back to the maker of the neck, and see if they'd be kind enough to adjust it for you. they probably wouldn't mind.

- file the bottom of the nut. i agree 100% with mark. it's WAY easier to screw up a nut and replace it than wreck the neck because it wasn't done properly.

- get a licensed floyd nut; they don't need as deep of a shelf.

- personally, i wouldn't recommend taking a file to the shelf. there's more options that won't be so irreversible.

where do you reccomend i get a liscensed floyd nut?
i had bought an R3 OFR nut from guitarpartsdepot.com and its really high.
and i really don't have the tools to grind a nut down.
