  • Invader in ash?

I have an ash Dinky Reverse on the way, and intend to replace the bridge pickup. I have a Full Shred in my ash DR2 that sounds awesome, but I want to try something different. No more JBs or Screamin' Demons for me. Most recently, I dropped an Invader in a basswood Dinky and was blown away by how good it sounded, but has anyone tried it in ash?

Bump. The guitar arrived last night and plays awesome, but the Duncan Designed bridge pickup has got to go! The local Jackson dealer gives installation discounts on pickups bought from them, and they have an Invader in stock, but so far nobody seems to have tried an Invader in ash.

I put a pair of old non-logoed Invaders in the Kelly XLR I used to own... loved them! Lots of low mids and bass without getting muddy. Though, the body was poplar and not ash. Maybe ask on the Duncan Forum and see if they can help.

I would think that it will not only be muddy, but terribly bright. I haven't liked that pickup in ANYTHING. Why don't you try the Distortion, the Custom, or the Custom Custom?

The Full Shred has worked great for me in my ash DR2, but it doesn't sound as powerful as I'd like. The Invader is great for rhythm in a basswood Dinky, and if anything lacks a little treble. That's fine for my rhythm tracks, and not a concern since I'll be using a JB for lead tracks, but live I just think that an Invader in an ash guitar would give a *little* more cut than in basswood.

My brother uses a Distortion in his neck-thru (alder? poplar?) Charvel, and although it seems to have a nicely balanced sound, it is a little boring in some way that I can't describe. I had a Custom in my Soloist Pro that I didn't dig at all. At this point, I'm just more inclined to try pickups I've been pleased with in other guitars, except with different wood.

                  Because of the ash body.

That begs the question: what pickup wouldn't sound too bright then? Anyway, the DR is most likely swamp ash rather than hard ash, so I doubt it'll be overly bright. Swamp ash is pretty balanced in my experience. The biggest difference between my swamp ash Charvel vs. the alder ones seems to be that it is a bit more resonant and "alive" sounding (for lack of a better term), rather than a big EQ difference. Not too many guitars are made of the bright hard Northern Ash anymore, so "ash" almost always refers to swamp ash, or "ash, punky" as JCMI calls it on work orders.

I bet the Invader will sound fine, and if you like it in basswood you'll probably like it in the new guitar as well. I used to use Invaders a lot back in the late '80s - early '90s, mostly in basswood Ibanez guitars but occasionally in other stuff. To me, it seems that higher output pickups tend to overcome some of the subtle tone differences that woods, construction methods, etc. bring to the table. Moreso than lower output pickups anyway. As always, it's a matter of taste, how sensitive your ears are to this stuff, etc., so ymmv.
