  • Please explain how to finish a body in tung oil

I have a body that needs finishing and due to lack of money, I want to know how to finish it in tung oil. I have never done this, so please tell me what materials and the process that needs to be followed to accomplish this. Thanks.

just like Mr Miagi says wax on wax off LOL
no realy its not that hard. just wipe a coat on let dry then another
buff with 0000 steel wool and repeat you dont need heavy coats
if your getting runs then your using too much
and dont use a lot of pressure when buffing or you'll burn thru
i only put three maybe four coats on necks at the shop

i don't know that i'd use tung oil, as it's kinda slow drying. find yourself some gunstock oil, and you'll be all good in the hood.

+1 tung oil often leaves a gummy feel. danish oil is also really good, & ive been told boiled linseed oil.

Ive got the tung oil thing down really well... you can get a satin finish, or like I prefer a nice gloss finish very similar to clearcoat with it. Great product and easy to use, very little mess!

Just to be clear - you have removed the old finish, right?

                HA!

but seriously, he makes a good point: i would have to say that the best way to make an eerie dess finish really pop would be to dunk the body in tung oil.

You can get Tru-Oil Gun stock oil at Wal-Mart. About $6.00. It's what they use at the Charvel CS. I have done 2 necks using it and they both came out great.

So Tru-oil gunstock and a rag and that's it? How many many coats should I give it and how much time should I give it between coats for the finish to dry off properly? Any sanding needed?

that body looks like ash in color if it is its a very strait grain
you would be much better off with shelac than an oil finish
but look for a date on the can more than 6 months old stay away from it
you can get it at Home Depot or Lowes. trust my input on this
i may be a newbie on this site but not new to building/repairs
