In my experience, black is almost always your "hot" lead.

Humbucker wiring screw up

If you have read the "Need serious help w/wiring" thread, you know that i had problems with the wiring on an old charvette. If not, you know it by now anyway
However, the humbucker is very noicy (noisier than the single coils!) and sounds VERY thin. I mean weaker/thinner than the singles! It sounds like total shit.
What did i do wrong?
I grounded the black and the silvercable, the blue one to the 5way switch, and soldered the white & red one together.
help!

Try grounding the blue and silver, and wire the black to the switch. That should fix it.

Breadfan,

Pickup companies suck, because each company uses different wiring convention. If you know who made the pickup (EMG?), you can (maybe) look it up here: http://guitarelectronics.zoovy.com/c...upcolorcodes/.

In a general sense, you would be right: the ground wire is black in many applications. Of course, green is also frequently used. IMHO, using black for the "hot" lead is just stupid.

Note the question mark - indicating that I am in no way sure of that. You seem to think that's funny , so tell us: what do do they have? Did Charvel make their own pickups, or did they outsource them and stick their logo on the cover?

And who made the lipsticks in the original Charvel Surfcaster? Inquiring minds want to know.

Kongaman, I'm not sure about ALL Charvettes, but mine came with a Charvel branded covered humbucker. It definitely wasn't an EMG, and it wasn't even an active pickup. I don't believe I've ever seen a Charvette with EMGs.

Wouldn't make much sense to put a $100.00 pickup on a $50.00 guitar!

FYI, EMG doesn't make only active pickups. Look up EMG Selects some time; truly a low-budget passive pickup that would be appropriate for a low budget guitar.

The question remains unanswered: Did Chravel make their own pickups, or did they buy them from someone else?
