  • emg's 18 volts

did it, love it, recomend it to everyone with emgs!

just take a new batt connector, clip the existing black, solder the new red to the old black and the new black to the old black going to the jack or accessories.

I'll have to do this to mine too. As soon as I can get my hands on another battery clip, the neck volume pot goes out to make room for another 9v.

      Re: emg\'s 18 volts

i thought i'd have to do that too, but i was able to put one batt flat and the other on its side and i was able to sqeeze both in the small cavity of my rhoads pro without removing any knobs.

oh and i wrapped both batts in electrical tape just incase cause i knew they'd be touching shit.

      world of difernce.

        Re: emg\'s 18 volts

I've just 'upvolted' my 85b/60n set. It's midnight here, so I can't crank it up but it seems like at 18 volts my EMGs have less bass (or more highs). Output is just a notch higher, not too much. I don't know if I like it. It seems like 85 turned into 81 which it replaced in the bridge and 60 isn't as warm as it was at 9 volts. Do you guys have the same feeling or is it just my ears playing tricks on me?

at low volumes its not going to have as much bass period.

wait till you can crank it.

I also cannot say enough about the mod!
it really did wonders to the feel and tone of the emgs(not that they were not friggin great before the mod!)
they feel much more like passives now and are just more alive.
the gained presence and transparency is perfect with high gain amps like mine(engl powerball and a savage 120)
before my 81 and 85 could( but not very often) sound a bit muddy with a lot of gain but now these are the most non muddy pups i ever tried! as a matter of fact i CANT make then sound muddy now
If it's not a CHARVEL then i dont want to play it,look at it or even fuckin THINK about it!

I listened to everyone here talk about it and did it to one of my guitars. It's the best. I've been meaning to mod a few of my other guitars that are still running 9 volts.

I installed a new set on my Model 4 and I did the 18volt thing. Very cool. I had played them at 9v, but that was so long ago I can't really remember the difference.

for those who still don't get it

if you want to try it without any cutting you can use this harness
