  • Need p'up wiring help...

    I'm taking an Ultrasonic humbucker out of an 87 Soloist and trying to put a JB in. The pots don't look stock to me and there looks to be some circuit board type parts in the cc. The pots are 470k and are coil tap type as well. There's a bunch of different colred wires runing from the pickup wire to the pot for the hum. Do the Duncan wires match with the Ultrasonic ones? I recall that some Duncans I had installed in another guitar had something different about the wires. There's no battery connection for this guitar. Everything just looks different from what I'm used to. If anyone can help walk me thru this, I'd appreciate it. I can take pics of the CC if need be. Thanks

        Here's the best pics I could take....I am holding the Ultrasonic hum p'up wire. One of the wires was attached to that green thing which, in turn, was soldered to the brass cavity plate. I don't know what it is but, when I go to put the JB in, I'll solder it back in place. It was not possible to pull the pot out to work on it w/o undoing that green thing. On the pot assembly, there are a bunch of metal tabs where wires are connected. I guess I could just take the other wires off and solder the new ones into place. I already swapped out the mini-switches as si visible in the pics and I put a new input jack in. Will these pots work with the JB? What about the coil tap function in each pot? I haven't figured out what that is for because he already had the 3 on off switches for the 2 sings and 1 hum. I can see splitting the hum but why have both pots with a push pull feature? Anyway, thatnk you for looking and any advice that will help me I would appreciate. And, if you're not able to help, thank you just the same. Wish I had the electronics knowledge that some of you all have. [img]images/icons/frown.gif[/img]

                  The green thing is a capacitor. The pot it is connected to should be a tone pot. Am I to assume the 3 mini toggles are on/offs for each individual pickup? If so than the push pull tops are most likely coil taps. 470K is fine. Humbuckers usually use 500K pots so 470k is fine. If it was all single coil pickups than you would see 250k pots. You should be able to desolder the ultra's and solder in your replacements with no problems. Follow the Duncan wiring specs for proper coil taps.
                  For standard series humbucking operation on a 4-Conductor wired humbucker the White & Red wires are soldered together and taped; Green is ground and Black is Hot Output. The bare wire is also grounded.
                  If you want to coil tap the pickup than simply take the soldered red and white wires and solder them onto a switch. Then ground the other pole of the switch. When you flip the switch it connects the red/white and the ground together and coil taps the pickup.
                  Also, to eliminate multiple grounds (potential ground loops) try to centralize all the grounds to one spot.
                  Of you remove the "green thing" the pot will no longer be a tone control. By the looks of the pics there doesn't seem to be any active circuits. Let me know. John G
