  • Silica gel?

I've heard people say both good and bad things about keeping silica gel inside cases with guitars for a long time...so which is it? Silica gel or no if I'm keeping guitars in their cases for an extended period of time?

i used to use them in gig bags, but once i forgot about them, left them in there for months and when i pulled my guitar out of the bag on day it was submerged in liquid. the packet of silica gel got too "wet" and blew up i think

I've never used it in guitar cases, but I'd imagine humidity doesn't affect solid-body guitars very much, if at all.

Yeah, maybe not the wood of the guitar, but probably humidity does affect the hardware of the guitar, I do keep a couple silica packs inside my KV-2's case, so far no problems, more than a year inside and no problems, and we got 90% humidity in PERU all year long.

If you don't use something like silica gel (for extended periods), then the metal will absorb excess moisture. Leads to oxidation = rust. I'd still want to keep checking the guitars monthly because even silica gel can only absorb so much moisture.

I keep them in all my cases, and that's primarily where I keep my guitars when they're not being played.

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer removed all the silca packets from the Cinco de Mayo (or was it Punto?) store to avenge Elaine.

I leave one in my case, it is nice for absorbing all the sweat off my guitar when I'm done playing it at a show.

I assume Silica Gel sachets keep the guitar and case smelling new too. I know a guy who stores his guitars in cases and they stink because he doesn't use SG.

yes they do help keep the musty orod out as well. I have them in all my cases and have not had any issues or problems. I agree that its a good idea to check them from time to time and make sure everything is good...otherwise they seem to work perfectly for me.
